After being selected twice in La Quinzaine des réalisateurs, what impression does it make to be in the official selection of Cannes film festival amid a global pandemic that prevents this event to take place and what do you expect from it?
I am naturally very happy that “Passion Simple” is in the official selection of Cannes Film Festival. It is the most beautiful showcase in the world for a film. A great opportunity to shine. For the past two days, we have received many requests and calls concerning the film. Even without a physical festival, the impact of Cannes label is undeniable. This year, and as an exception, being in the official selection of Cannes Festival will not prevent us from being in any other A festival, and so my film will be part of other important selections that will be announced very soon… We are very excited !
Do you consider 2020 a wasted year? What does it mean for independent filmmakers?
2020 was a very complicated year for artists around the world, in France and especially in Lebanon. But nothing will ever stop the dream. During those three months, I was able to continue writing my next scenario. It helped me believe that life will soon resume. I would like to point out that Thierry Fremaux’s determination to keep the festival running, his love of cinema and his desire to highlight this year’s films and their filmmakers are amazing. His gave hope to the artists and to the cinema industry.
What are your dreams for cinema after COVID19?
To go back to the cinema theatres very soon!

What does it bring you to have your name associated with Cannes Film Festival for the first time and especially today, in these very particular circumstances of a world pandemic?
Getting recognized by Cannes Film Festival is one of the greatest honors a filmmaker can hope for. I am both humbled and tremendously grateful that Broken Keys made the 2020 Official Selection. The festival never stopped promoting films and filmmakers, and this year, despite an unprecedented and historic pandemic, the festival did so by revealing a list of its official selection.
What a beautiful experience for a first film…!
I was lucky to collaborate with incredible people and filmmakers in the process of making the film. I am grateful to Antoun Sehnaoui and Ezekiel Productions for the opportunity and the trust he granted us, to Frederic Domont and Ginger Productions for all the great work they have accomplished. I am thankful to every single member of the amazing crew and all the hard work they put in under very challenging circumstances. I am honored to have collaborated with Oscar-winning composer Gabriel Yared who has been the most inspiring partner. Last but not least, I wish to congratulate the talented cast filled with Lebanese stars that I had the opportunity to work with. Each one of them has been a significant added value.
What are your expectations from this prestigious Cannes label for your first film?
My hope is that Cannes’ prestigious recognition will be followed by other victories and opportunities that will promote the film further and that the film will resonate strongly with audiences in Lebanon and worldwide.
