Festival films on the green
Fondation Liban Cinema-FLC decided for this year to establish a partnership with Films on the Green festival , a free outdoor French film festival produced annually in New York City hosted by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, FACE Foundation and the City of New York Parks & Recreation, to expand for the first time on the American continent.
In its eighth consecutive year, the Green films festival’s that took place from May 29th to July 31st focused on the Mediterranean cinema.
The Festival included Nadine Labaki’s first feature Caramel who received 5 awards and was nominated for 8.
The screening of the film took place on Friday, June 5th in Washington Square Park, in the presence of a big audience who enjoyed the movie that relates the experience of five Lebanese women who meet regularly to talk and confide in each other, sharing their intimate stories about men, sex, motherhood, and their personal liberation.
On this occasion, Maya De Freige, president of Fondation Liban Cinema introduced Caramel by giving few details about it. The movie made a box office record in Lebanon and was distributed over Europe and the Americas; it also succeeded in making 15 million dollars engrossing worldwide.
The films that were part of the festival, transported the public on a long journey, not only to the French Riviera, not only to Italy, but also to Beirut, to Cairo, to a small town in Tunisia and to the Casbah of Algiers, presenting an inclusive and panoramic picture of French and francophone cinema of the past and present and it reminded everybody that the Mediterranean is not a place of violence, but it’s really a cradle of culture.
